Asking the directions

Here's how you can ask directions in Finnish.

Questions:

Missä se on?
Where is it?
Miten sinne pääsee?
How do I get there?
Onko se kaukana?
Is it far?
Onko sinulla karttaa?
Do you have a map?

Directions:

Vasemmalla
on the left
Oikealla
on the right
Suoraan
straight
Kääntyä vasemmalle
to turn left
Kadun yli
across the street
Joen varrella
by the river
Tuolla
there
Täällä
here
Tuohon suuntaan
that direction

Postpositions

Postpositions are little words, almost like prepositions, but instead they placed after the word, not in front (hence the name postposition).

Earlier we learned how Finnish uses endings instead of prepositions to express locations (as opposed to, for example to English: "in the house" = "talossa"). There are also numerous postposition you can use to express where something is located.

edessä
in front
takana
behind
päällä
on the top
alla
under
laidalla
on the side
lähellä
near
yli
across

The main word is in genitive with these postpositions (also partive is possible with some others).

Me olemme torin laidalla.
We are by the market square.
Mene joen yli.
Go across the river.
Tunkio on talon takana.
The dump is behind the house.
